The Beginners Guide to Google Trends

If you are like many website owners, you appreciate the fact that understanding the popularity of trends is a great way to target your marketing campaigns as well as have a better understanding of what your competitors are doing. You will be pleased to know that this can all be accomplished with the help of a system known as Google Trends. So, how can you use this platform and what are some of the benefits?

What are Google Trends?

Trends show the relative popularity of search topics on Google. This means that the interface doesn’t show you the search volume, although it may correspond with an increase in search traffic for a popular term. What it shows is the relative popularity of that term in comparison with all the searches for that area and the date range.

Google makes a selection of popular search terms. Highly specific queries with low volume are given a 0 rating. Everything else is scaled from 1-100, depending on its popularity in relation to other searches.

Google’s sampling will include data that may have been removed from other search products, and this data includes real-time information as well as historic data for previous years. This allows you to examine topical trends as well as recurring seasonal ones.

In a nutshell, trends will not provide information on every single search made; there are far too many searches for that! It can, however, provide a vast amount of information that is relevant to your business and customer base.

So, what can Google Trends do for you?

Monitor Search Trends

Because you can monitor search trends, you can track the popularity of certain search times and schedule content based on times that see a higher search rate. To do this, simply head to Google Trends and search for any given term. For example, if you search for ‘winter coat’ you will see that naturally, the searches peak in November.

Recognising the patterns will help you publish relevant content when people are searching for it.

Find new keywords

The best way to get new content ideas is to start your search with a keyword. Select the time range and country, and scroll down to the last two blocks. In the ‘related queries’ block on the right, you will get suggestions that are related to your keyword.

If you click on any of these keyword suggestions, it shows more in-depth statistics for that specific query and even more keyword suggestions. You can use this to dig deeper and jump from keyword to keyword to get new popular content ideas!

Target local audiences

Another great feature of Google Trends is the ability to learn about your audience. When you search for a query, you will see the regions and cities where your content or products are the most popular.

You can then use this data to optimise your website for local SEO and target these specific areas through paid ads or customised content.
